My Story

My Journey with Disability Rights

Disability Rights UK is more than just an advocacy charity; it transforms lives. They fight for those who are often left behind, ensuring that people with disabilities can access their rights, live independently, and have their voices heard. They empower individuals to stand up against injustice and it equips them with the tools to advocate for themselves.

Their work deeply resonates with me because I’ve witnessed how Disability Rights UK’s resources empower my colleagues and friends, helping them fight for their children and communities, enabling them to make a real difference through the law. In my own role within advice charities, I’ve worked for four years to use legislation to uphold dignity and equality for people with long-term disabilities and health conditions - I could not have done it without Disability Rights UK.

I've helped people losing their homes or cuddling their dog to keep warm in winter when they can't afford heating, as well as those in absolute financial crisis who are barely making ends meet for their children. With the support of Disability Rights UK, I've been able to use the law to change their lives. Running this marathon is my way of honouring these people.

It's also for the people I care about and overcoming my own battles. I’m running for my nephews and nieces, my best friends and everyone who faces the daily struggles of living in a world that often doesn’t accommodate them. I’m also running for myself - and for the younger version of me who had her own journey.

As a teenager, I battled crippling OCD and spent time in hospital. These experiences shaped who I am today, and they’re why I’m so passionate about ensuring that everyone has access to the support they need to live with dignity. This marathon is my way of channelling my struggles into my strength, standing up for myself, and standing up for those who need a voice.

By donating, you’re supporting a movement that empowers the most vulnerable to fight for their rights and a better life. Your contribution, no matter how small, would mean the world to me.

Love, Assy xx

About the London Marathon:

The London Marathon has become an annual, inspiring and colourful fixture in the world’s sporting calendar since the inaugural race on 29 March 1981: a celebration of fun, fundraising and fancy dress.

Over the years more than a million people have completed thich runs from Blackheath to The Mall, with a spectacular finish in front of Buckingham Palace, showcasing the very best that the capital city has to offer.

What’s more, these participants have raised over a billion pounds for charity and there have been countless amazing tales of human achievement throughout the event’s history – living up to its aim of helping participants ‘to have fun, and provide some happiness and sense of achievement in a troubled world’.
