My Story - Why I run

Many people have asked me over ther years if I have run a Marathon? The answer is no. I have completed many challenges but running 26 miles is not one of them.

When I was young we used to watch the London Marathon on a Sunday morning. I was not a fit kid, far from it in fact. But I started running when i was 15 years old. I could manage 12 min non stop, so I ran 6min out and 6 back from my house. Over time I got fitter and was so pleased the day I pushed myself to the canal bridge, the 2 mile turnaround. I remember the run back, the country lane stretched far in front of me, the dawn chorus was loud and encouraging. That was the first time I truelly tested myself physically.

I have alway's loved running as it takes me back to the dawn runs in rural northamptonshire. It gives me a sense of freedom and its an exersize you can do anywhere anytime.

Im now over 50 and fitter than I have ever been. The marathon is a great challenge for me to take on and I am extremely excited.

One thing I love about this event is the amount that is raised for charities. I was delighted when I was introduced to Norwood and given the opportunity to run for them. Norwood supports people with learning disabilities and those in family crisis.

Its local to London, a town I called home for 4 wonderful years.

I'm running for Norwood!

About Norwood

Norwood makes an invaluable difference to people's lives. We have a multi-disciplinary team of practitioners and a family of services designed specifically to support vulnerable children and their families, and children with special educational needs.

We have social workers, family support workers, counsellors and specially tailored parenting programmes and support groups, to provide support and advice to children and families in crisis or experiencing difficult times. We are there to offer immediate, short or long-term help to those that reach out to us.

We offer educational support services, occupational therapy, speech therapy and groups for children with social and emotional difficulties. We advocate for parents of a child struggling with school because of an emotional or learning difficulty. We are there for the child and the parent.

We offer a respite facility for children with learning disabilities or complex health needs. A service we offer for the child, yet one that has the most profound impact on the life of their family.

The London Marathon

The London Marathon has become an annual, inspiring and colourful fixture in the world’s sporting calendar since the inaugural race on 29 March 1981: a celebration of fun, fundraising and fancy dress.

Over the years more than a million people have completed the 26.2-mile course – which runs from Blackheath to The Mall, with a spectacular finish in front of Buckingham Palace, showcasing the very best that the capital city has to offer.

What’s more, these participants have raised over a billion pounds for charity and there have been countless amazing tales of human achievement throughout the event’s history – living up to its aim of helping participants ‘to have fun, and provide some happiness and sense of achievement in a troubled world’.
