My Story

Why Wooden Spoon?

In 2020, I started a Special Educational Needs and Disability Programme at Thanet Wanderers RUFC.  We regularly have 25+ children at every session and it has enabled these children to be part of a team for the first time in their lives. Our 2 year journey culminated at the Wooden Spoon Tagfest Tournament in Coventry in June of this year, an event that bought together similar programmes from all over the UK. It was the most magical experience for all of those who took part and personally the most rewarding thing I have ever done.

Wooden Spoon, the rugby charity for children, organised the event and financially supported each team to help cover the costs for their travel and accommodation. Without this support our journey to take part in Coventry would have been a much harder one.

I am not a very good runner and am slightly nervous about the challenge infront of me BUT knowing I am paying back in some small way the opportunty that Wooden Spoon gave to the children taking part in the programme is more than enough to get me to that finish line.

Our very first session back in 2022 was only 10 minutes old when I saw a mum rather tearful on the sideline. I went over thinking something had gone wrong to be told that this was the first time she had seen her daughter catch a ball. That very same girl played in the tournament in Coventry and scored her very first try. Your donations will guarantee more moments like that.

Every penny you give goes towards this programme and the other amazing projects that Wooden Spoon run nationally so please give as generaously as you can.

Many thanks, you are making a big difference to a child's life somewhere. x
