My Story
On Sunday 27th April 2025, I will be taking on the biggest challenge of my life to date – running the London Marathon – for a fantastic local charity, the Berkshire Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Therapy Centre.
The Berkshire MS Therapy Centre supports local people in managing their Multiple Sclerosis symptoms with treatments not available elsewhere in a safe space where people have a chance to meet and support each other. Unlike the majority of other diseases, MS has no known cause or cure. It is a chronic autoimmune disease attacking the body’s central nervous system.
On 26th November 2024, I visited the Centre, located just off Oxford Road in Reading, to learn more about the Centre’s work, experience the oxygen therapy tank, and in doing so met some of their incredible service users (the true champions) in preparation for my big feat!
Those diagnosed with MS are compelled to manage their symptoms and have to accept the harsh reality that they will likely never be cured. Mentally, let alone physically, this is difficult to accept. During my visit, I met people as young as 30 years old with MS as well as older people – anyone, you or me, could be diagnosed.
The Berkshire MS Therapy Centre have no funding from the NHS and will provide over 13,000 treatments supporting over 300 local families just this year. They need our help! Their demand is increasing year-on-year. The Centre provides their treatments FREE for their service users and have the only oxygen therapy tank in Berkshire – a treatment which massively helps alleviate symptoms of MS in which the service users rely upon weekly. The Centre, its staff, and its commendable group of volunteers also provide free physiotherapy, social activities, exercise, counselling, and other services to those with MS in Berkshire including assistance for carers.
My training for the London Marathon has already covered 1,000 miles and I have another 500 miles to cover for the big day. As a training run, I will also be taking on the Reading Half Marathon on Sunday 23rd March 2025.
Every donation will make a real difference to this small, local charity and the people they support, and I know – I’ve seen it in person. I appreciate times are tough, but to steal a phrase, every little helps.
