Darren Clarke's London Marathon
James Wildman
My Story
This year I took a chance and applied for a charity position to run the London Marathon 2025 in memory of one my best mates Darren Clarke, who sadly passed away in 2023. I didn't think I would hear back, however I was luckily offered a place to represent Pancreatic Cancer UK and got the phone call whilst on a trail run with one of Darren's and my closest friends who continues to motivate me, Dan Hill. I'm incredibly excited about this opportunity!
After Darren's diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in 2022, he was given months to live. He battled so hard over the next year that followed, but sadly passed away at the age of 35 leaving behind his loving family and friends. I made excuse after excuse to Darren and other friends over the years, to not enter any races. However with him as my inspiration, motivating me to keep running and make the most of life I completed my first personal challenge of running the Plymouth Half Marathon this year and raised £1,000 for St Luke's Hospice. Darren was a keen runner, and much faster than I will ever be but he never got to run the London Marathon despite entering many times and so it's only fitting that I do it in his memory.
I will continue to train over the coming months, starting with a 12 hour run for 'Hope 12' in July 2024 and an Ultra 32 mile (7000ft) trail run in August 2024 both with Dan Hill, which should be good preparation for the London Marathon in 2025.
I have felt, and continue to feel so inspired by Darren. His drive and determination throughout life was incredible but especially during his final year was unbelievable, he truly was the most mentally resilient person I ever met and I want to do him proud.
It's coming up to a year since he passed and not a day goes by that I don't think of him, I know everyone that was in his life feels the same. Darren truly lived his life to the full and has given us all so many fantastic memories.
I'm hoping to raise as much money as possible for Pancreatic Cancer UK, please donate if you can ♥️ xx
