Why do I run?
.... For those that can't!
A few years ago, my partner & best friend's entire life and career were taken away from him after he was diagnosed with life-changing conditions. He was a sprinter training with Team GB, and his dream was to participate in the Olympics one day. He was rushed into major surgery and was told that if he had waited any longer, he would have died. Overnight, his world was turned upside down, and he had to come to terms with a new way of life. How do you even begin to understand how it would feel to be one of the fastest athletes in the country to be bedbound? He was told he would soon be confined to a wheelchair. Despite these challenges, he is somehow fighting all the odds.
Last April, I couldn’t run 5k without stopping or gasping for air. I decided to sign up for a challenge and complete my first half marathon in May 2024 but London Marathon has always been a dream goal of mine. He helped train me and I fell in love with running and the post-run highs. I cannot comprehend how he gets out of bed every day with a smile on his face and never complains about the physical and mental pain he battles every day. Being able to run is a luxury not everyone can have, whether you're fast or slow, it simply does not matter. It has also taught me that I'm capable of far more than I ever thought possible. You have helped me train so hard for this race, and I will always dedicate them to you, my ongoing inspiration. Thank you for sharing your favorite sport with me and thank you to Brain Research UK for allowing me this opportunity to run the London Marathon for you, it has been a dream of mine to do!
About us
The London Marathon has become an annual, inspiring and colourful fixture in the world’s sporting calendar since the inaugural race on 29 March 1981: a celebration of fun, fundraising and fancy dress.
Over the years more than a million people have completed the 26.2-mile course – which runs from Blackheath to The Mall, with a spectacular finish in front of Buckingham Palace, showcasing the very best that the capital city has to offer.
What’s more, these participants have raised over a billion pounds for charity and there have been countless amazing tales of human achievement throughout the event’s history – living up to its aim of helping participants ‘to have fun, and provide some happiness and sense of achievement in a troubled world’.
