My Story
Why am I running for the National Eczema Society?
Ezcema affects 1 in 10 adults and 1 in 5 babies. Living with eczema presents several significant challenges that impact a persons quality of life. This varies from:
- Intense itching and pain
- Skin barrier dysfuction
- Phychological impact
- Impact on daily life including bathing, dressing and physical activities
- Sleep disturbances
- Impact on mental health
- Social impact
There's a whole lot more as well.
Having suffered from eczema conditions throughout my life I can tell you from my personal experience that it's more than just an itch. In January 2024, I suffered from an intense 3-month flare up covering 75% of my body which had a drastic effect on my physical and mental wellbeing. For this entire period, I was unable to sleep for more than 1-hour per night and was waking up in pools of my own blood. Wearing clothes, showering, and moving in general was extremely painful. Thankfully, after many hospital visits and dermatology appointments appointments I was able to get the condition under control. But, what kills me is the fact that thousands of people are suffering daily, some as severly as my case. I am going through the pain of running the London Marathon on behalf of those people, as a sign of gratitude that I was able to get my life back, and on behalf of the great work that NES do.
Why donate to NES?
NES provides vital support services such as helplines, support groups and online resources that help suffering individuals and families cope. The funds contribute to research initiatives aimed at understanding the causes of eczema and develop better treatments with the hope of one day finding a cure for all. NES works to raise awareness about eczema amoung the general public and healthcare professionals. This leads to better understanding, reduced stigma and improved support. The charity also advocates for better healthcare provision, ensuring that suffers receieve the best care. NES fosters a supportive community where individuals affected by eczema can connect, share experiences and find solidarity, so they know they are not alone.
