My Story

Sailors' Society

I am so thrilled to be joining #TeamSailorsSociety for the TCS London Marathon 2025.

Over 90% of international trade is carried out via the shipping industry; goods and fuels being transported around the world, thanks to seafarers. Without them the global economy would grind to a halt, placing businesses and millions of jobs around the world in jeopardy. Keeping economies thriving however, sadly comes at a price. Missing birthdays, celebrations, key milestones in loved ones’ lives and everything in between is unfortunately the norm for most seafarers, as trip lengths can vary from just a few weeks all the way up to several months and in some cases, years. As exciting as the industry is, this lifestyle of course poses strains on workers and their families, often leading to severe mental health issues.

A study in 2022 found that half to two thirds of seafarers are highly stressed, and nearly a third of seafarers are suffering or have suffered with depression. The increasing threat in certain parts of the world, such as the Red Sea, adds another layer to the difficulties that sailors’ face in the workplace, quite literally putting their lives on the line in order to keep life ashore running smoothly.

Sailors’ Society are a welfare charity for merchant mariners and their families, pioneering the way to provide a 24/7 service from all over the globe. Whether it be due to everyday struggles in the workplace or something triggered by a specific event, Sailors’ Society are there to help with any situation. The work they carry out is critical for seafarers and therefore for keeping the shipping industry on its feet.

As a seafarer myself, most of my marathon training will be carried out whilst on ship around the flight deck and in the ship's gym. I'll be posting updates to this page and hope that you will support me in my effort to fundraise for this phenomenal charity!
