My Story
Running a marathon has always been on my bucket list, with the London Marathon being the ultimate goal. I was lucky to get a place in the Brighton marathon in 2020 and completed my 20 mile training run the day before Covid lockdown started. Since then I have lost not only my running but exercise mojo big time. I have always been active, playing many sports before I joined up and throughout my 23 years in the Royal Air Force. Then whilst teaching college students on Uniformed Services Courses fitness was one of the key elements I promoted and taught. Being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 2003 whilst still serving in the Royal Air Force was a shock and since diagnosis I have tried to keep as fit and active as I can as it helps me physically as well as mentally deal with the condition. For me chronic fatigue, dealing daily with the physical and mental impact of the disease as well as trying to accept I can't do what I used to are my major battles. Since joining Invictus I am humbled by so many people's stories and realise I am very lucky compared to many other people. But most importantly I understand that not all debilitating and limiting conditions are visible and people with these conditions need a voice as well. I am hoping that me representing this amazing charity helps raise awareness of this. Also if anyone else ever finds themselves laying by a pool in Benidorm with a pint of dubious sangria in hand thinking should I apply for this.... just do it!
