World Record Attempt! Patrick Stokes to Smash Crutch Marathon Barrier for Shine
Meet Patrick Stokes, a real-life Superman on crutches! Diagnosed with the most severe form of spina bifida (Myelomeningocele) and having undergone nearly 100 surgeries, Patrick has faced more challenges than most. But he doesn't just overcome obstacles, he conquers them – often in the most unconventional ways.
From barely being able to take a few steps to training for the TCS London Marathon, Patrick's journey is a testament to the power of the human spirit. After his health deteriorated during the pandemic, Patrick decided to fight back, literally one step at a time. He went from walking three steps in his living room to conquering miles on his crutches, culminating in this incredible marathon challenge.
But this isn't just about personal achievement. Patrick is determined to make history by setting a new world record for the fastest marathon on crutches (male) - MP3, CID2, a feat never before accomplished by someone with his form of spina bifida. He's also walking on crutches to raise vital funds for Shine, a charity that supports individuals living with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, as well as their families and caregivers. Shine is close to Patrick's heart, and every penny raised will go directly to them.
"I'm doing this for the child that was told they never could or never would," says Patrick. "If I only inspire one person, that will do me."
Patrick's training regimen is as inspiring as his story. From walks of 8-11km 5-7 miles during the week to grueling long-distance treks on the weekend his most recentbe 26km or 16 miles, he's pushing his limits to prepare for the 26.2-mile challenge. He's not just walking a marathon on crutches; he's walking for hope, for inspiration, and for a future where everyone has the chance to shine.
