My Story
I will be running the London Marathon in support of Bliss as it is a charity that holds a very special place in our hearts…
Those of you who know me, will know that our son Teddy was born at only 29 weeks - some 11 weeks early, weighing just 3lb 10oz. Being so early he had many complications which included a severe bleed on the brain as well as chronic lung disease, eye infections, jaundice – the list went on….. As his lungs weren’t developed fully he needed the assistance of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy in order for him to breathe and was almost 4 weeks old by the time he could breathe by himself.
He spent over 9 weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with many ups and downs including sleep apnoea where he regularly stopped breathing and eyes infections which could have caused him to be blind. The emotional rollercoaster eased over time and thankfully, as the days and weeks went by, he grew stronger and stronger to the point where we could finally take him come home.
So, fast-forward 13 years and he is doing everything a 13-year-old boy should (and shouldn’t! 😆 ) do, and that is all down to the specialist care and attention he received whilst in hospital. We will be forever grateful to Bliss, who supported us through our darkest hours. The nurses that helped him, and us, were nothing short of angels - truly inspirational - and we will always be extremely grateful to them for their kindness and support. Their dedication, care and attention to detail ensured that Ted had the best start to his early life he could wish for and that has allowed him to grow into the kind, funny, thoughtful and caring boy we as parents are lucky to call our son.
He is our world, my hero, and we are SO PROUD of his journey. There is not a day goes by that I don’t thank God, and Bliss, that we have him in our lives. No amount of money can ever repay what Bliss have done for us, but if I can put myself through 26 miles of complete agony in order to give something back then that is the price I’m more than willing to pay.
I know the current cost of living means that money is tight for everyone, but if I could ask that you please give whatever you can to this amazing charity, in order that they can continue to help parents and families just like us, it would mean so much.
Thank you!
