Mencap London Marathon 2025
Rachel and Martin's London Marathon Adventure 🏃♀️🏃
My Story
Hello!
So, we're about to face our biggest journey yet – and will be running the TCS London Marathon together in April 2025 .
We’d both agree that this is some feat, and that running is not something that comes naturally to either of us.
I struggle massively with the impact of living with continuous pain and fatigue, amongst other symptoms, from an auto-immune condition, and any activity of this level takes a huge toll on me, mentally and physically, and has to be managed carefully
And in Martin’s words – “to put it into context, I am 49 years old, currently approximately 20 stone with a background of being a front row forward in Rugby Union, so not what you’d call a natural runner”.
However, we have ALWAYS proven that our focus and determination carries us through to succeeding in all our challenges and adventures
Martin is currently the President of Ardal Aberystwyth Rotary Club for 2024/2025 and has committed to undertake this as a personal ‘President’s Challenge’ to raise funds for local and national charities.
And similarly, being inspired by the work of Mencap, we will be using this challenge to raise money for this worthwhile cause. Having two young people with disabilities within the family, I have a real understanding of the barriers facing young people with disabilities – from education and healthcare, through to independent living and employment.
Right now, people with a learning disability face inequalities in every area of life with almost 1 in 3 young people with a learning disability spending less than 1 hour outside their home on a typical Saturday. They face barriers finding a job, accessing activities in their local community and receiving good quality healthcare. We tackle these issues head on by providing support in a way that meets individual needs and encourages greater independence. Mencap gives expert advice and information that empowers people and their families, and campaign relentlessly for changes that brings greater equality for people with a learning disability.
By supporting #TeamMencap you’re helping us to support people with a learning disability to live the life they choose, and do the things they love.
