My Story
I’ll be honest, I’m not a runner. Far from it in fact. But I have all the motivation I need to run the marathon – I’ll do it all for Dad.
I lost Dad to Pancreatic Cancer on 22 November 2022 – he was only 61. Up until a couple of weeks before Dad was diagnosed, he seemed like a completely fit and healthy man. No symptoms, no warning signs, nothing. Once the symptoms were there though, he declined fast, and we lost him only 1 month and 1 day after his diagnosis. That’s the thing with Pancreatic Cancer – it’s the deadliest common cancer and 50% of those diagnosed will die within 3 months. Dad unfortunately fell into that 50%. It truly is a silent killer.
Those who know me will know how close my Dad and I were. I’d call him every day on my way into work, just for a chat about anything and everything, he was my sounding board and my voice of reason for absolutely everything. I could have had another 30 years with Dad, pretty much my lifetime again, but instead it was cut short by this cruel and unforgiving disease.
Despite the survival rates of Pancreatic Cancer being so low, it still receives just 3% of the UK cancer research budget – a percentage that hasn’t changed since 1993. It relies heavily on fundraising events and donations to maintain consistent research and ultimately improve the current devastating statistics.
I’m so grateful for anything you can do to support me – share this page, follow along on Instagram (@BeckyRunsPCUK) and any donations, large or small, will go such a long way.
Dad, this one’s for you. All my love forever.
