My Story

Hi!

Next year I will be running the London Marathon for Breast Cancer Now in memory of my dear Mum who we lost in 2022.

In December 2021, my Mum, Catherine Richards, was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer.  As you can imagine, this alone was devastating news to me and my family.  Before we ever got to fully process this, Mum lost the battle, and in January 2022, only a month since diagnosis, passed away.  All of our hearts were, and still are, shattered, and not a day goes by where it doesn't hurt.

Mum was the best woman I will ever have the pleasure of knowing.  She gave all of her time towards looking after my Dad, brother and I.  I have never known someone to live so selflessly, with such love and kindness as she did.  Losing her so unexpectedly left scars that will never truly heal, however she would certainly have wanted me to to keep living the life that she paved the way for.  Running this marathon for Breast Cancer Now, is one way I wish to repay what she gave to me, if the money I raised can go towards preventing even one person from going through any of this, then I am sure she would be looking down with a smile!

I have worked tirelessly to change my own life around in the last year, with the intention of running the London Marathon.  I have always been overweight, and grieving only made things worse.  Last year, I found myself at a crossroad.  Either continue throwing my life away with comfort eating, nights out and lazing around, or make some serious changes and sort out my health and career.  Using Mum, as well as my Dad and brother as motivation, I started to put the effort in.

Since then, I have lost 5 stone (32kg)!  Once I picked up running at the start of 2024, I never looked back, and enjoy every second of it.  The mental benefits have been just as beneficial as physical, allowing me to finally make progress in my career as an illustrator as well.

Being an illustrator, I have lots of plans to incorporate my profession alongside my fundraising.  To start with, I will be doing a commission (free!) for the donator who guesses closest to my marathon finish time, so leave a time prediction if you wish to enter this!

Until race day next year, I will be updating running progress on strava, as well as any new fundraising activities over on my instagram @samricharts2.  On September 1st I am also running The Big Half mararthon, so make sure to see how I get on!

I want to say a big thank you to Breast Cancer Now for letting me join their 2025 team.  When I found out I had a place I was very tearful, and cannot wait to send the money I raise to them next year.  Also a big thank you to my Dad - Alec, and brother - Ben, who continue to inspire me every day.

Lastly, thank you to my Mum.  You gave so much to me, and I hope I can pay a fraction of your love back during this process šŸ©·
