My Story

In October 2021 our incredible mother, Sarah Bear, was diagnosed with bowel cancer. In March 2022, we were told there was nothing more that could be done. Our priority was to make her as comfortable as possible at home, whilst enabling her to spend precious time with us and us with her - sharing her wisdom and memories in the home that she made.

Family and friends really were Bear’s number one priority, surrounding everyone she knew with her love and her time. Her resourcefulness and ability to find fun and joy in anything is something that we will always cherish.

Bear was at home for just over a month before she died, allowing her to spend time with friends and family including her newly born first grand daughter. This was made possible by Lawrence Nurses who provided care through the night for Bear and support for us.

I’m running this marathon to disprove the newspaper cutting she always reminded us of: ‘today’s kids have it too easy’ and raise money for the incredible charity,  Lawrence Nurses, that helped us through this challenging time. We’ll be forever grateful for the extra time we had with our beautiful mother.

Lawrence Nurses is an Oxfordshire based charity dedicated to providing compassionate hospice-at-home care, respite support, and bereavement services to families in need.

This year, Lawrence Nurses needs to raise £575,000 to continue delivering their essential care services to the community. Your donation will help them to provide:

Hospice-at-home care – allowing patients to remain in a place of comfort, surrounded by loved ones.

Respite support – giving carers the chance to rest, knowing their loved one is in safe hands.

Bereavement support – help families navigate grief through home visits and their Bereavement Walk and Talk programme.
