My Story

Running for Cancer Research UK is an absolute privilege! I support them wherever I can, knowing they are working hard toward a brighter future where fewer lives will be lost to cancer. Having lost loved ones and friends to cancer, and knowing so many others with their own diagnoses, losses, and stories, there is nothing better than knowing I am helping toward that ultimate goal.

This year would have been our wonderful Mum's 60th birthday. It's a milestone we so dearly wish we could celebrate with her. No doubt, it would have been brilliant fun, with fancy dress and silly games! A lot has changed since we lost her—my eldest has grown from a tiny baby to a bubbly, hilarious young boy, two more gorgeous grandsons have arrived, and we've celebrated both my sister’s and brother’s beautiful weddings. There was so much more life to live, and cancer so cruelly took that away far too soon.

To mark the boys' “Grandma Clairebear’s” 60th year and celebrate the memories and legacy she left behind, it feels fitting to embrace greater challenges this year. I am incredibly excited to be running the London Marathon just one week before Mum's birthday. As a loyal member of Aldridge Runnung Club, this was an event Mum looked forward to watching and supporting each year – what better way to honor her and mark five years of missing her crazy antics and presence in our lives.

Sadly, like too many others, there will be another carried in my heart on race day. After a life well lived, we lost our much-loved Nanny Rita seven years ago to a sudden cancer diagnosis. "Nanny Nails” was the heart of our family, selflessly supporting loved ones through many tough times, always with a smile, an infectious laugh, and a love for life’s adventures. Everyone needs someone as special as her in their lives, and I truly wish we could have had her for longer.

So for Mum, Nanny Rita, my late Soul’d Out UK bandmates Paul and Dave, who shared so many good times, and all who are affected by cancer—this run is for you 💗 Wish me luck!! 🏃‍♀️

About us

The London Marathon has become an annual, inspiring and colourful fixture in the world’s sporting calendar since the inaugural race on 29 March 1981: a celebration of fun, fundraising and fancy dress.

Over the years more than a million people have completed the 26.2-mile course – which runs from Blackheath to The Mall, with a spectacular finish in front of Buckingham Palace, showcasing the very best that the capital city has to offer.

What’s more, these participants have raised over a billion pounds for charity and there have been countless amazing tales of human achievement throughout the event’s history – living up to its aim of helping participants ‘to have fun, and provide some happiness and sense of achievement in a troubled world’.
