My Story

Hellooooo!

Im going to be running the London marathon in April in aid of the Gurkha Welfare Trust.  Ive started training, so it must be real!

Why the Gurkha Welfare Trust? Simply, I'd love to be able to give something back to a community and charity which meant so much to my Nan, Margaret.

Nan used to live at the 34th Gurkha Army Service Corp base in Batu Pahat, Johor, Malaysia in the 60's, and spent time teaching children in the British Military Schools. Nan felt that teaching was her calling in life, and everthing she did was to educate and be educated.

It was only when sorting through Nans belongings that I started to learn more about her time in Malaysia on base, many memories shared in over 100 letters back to home.  To not say she was well looked after would be ignoring all the qualities that the Gurkhas are revered for, which clearly left a mark on her outlook on life, we even joked she had a Gurkha mentaility towards her last days not even knowing she had showed them a thing or two herself!

The GWT schools programme builds and repairs schools in remote regions of Nepal to improve access to education and in turn offer a better future to Nepali children.  The GWT schools have benefited hundreds of remote villages. Last year 13 were built in total. They also delivered refurbishments to 105 schools. This can be something as simple as the delivery of new desks or books, right up to the building of new toilet blocks. In total over 40,000 children were benifited by these works.

Education was a vast part of Nans life so this is very much a nod to her memory, its such a good cause for so many more reasons than Ive shared and education is just a small section of what the trust does, any support you are able to offer, would be hugely appreciated.

"Dhanyabad" (Thank you) in advance for your support!!
